When I came up with a concept to redesign the wayfinding system of Nanyang Technological University, School of Art, Design, Media, I wanted the signage to capture the students’ lifestyle beyond the class hours. Staying back in school is a norm, and students often creep out of their dungeons to grab a bite or coffee in the middle of the night. Hence “The Coffee House–inspired” design transpired from the need to exude life and character of the life that runs its course throughout the day. 
 
The retro–styled coffee house design aims to enhance the students’ experience while they are working late through the night. The signage becomes fully ‘awakened’ at night, with the light bulbs activated — giving a sense that there is creativity brewing within its doors. The colours add a warm and cosy feel to the school’s concrete interior and the idea of a ‘coffee house’ subtly lends to the idea that life in an art school is a lot of work and sometimes very little sleep. 
 
All together, the wayfinding system shows that the life in the School of Art, Design, Media never sleeps.
